Social Media in Libraries

Libraries use social media to engage their customers, promote events, books, tools, services, opening hours and general information.

Facebook is an online social networking service. Libraries create a profile for other users to like to then view their status updates, exchange messages, view phots and receive notifications when others contribute to their page.

The Geelong West Library has a Facebook page which references the Geelong Library Facebook page.

Twitter is an online social networking service that libraries to communicate to the users “tweets” that are short 140 character messages.

The Geelong Library uses twitter, it is one tool they are using to keep customers up to date with the status of the construction of their new library.

Pinterest is a web and mobile application that allows libraries to visual discover, collect, share and store pictures.  Libraries can create boards for their users to view and share.

Yarra Plenty Regional Library uses Printest to visually share information.  They sort their pin boards in Dewey order.

The National Library participates in a variety of social media.  Each network has their own particular uses.

ABSTRACT

Imagine a time when social media becomes an integral part of life. In fact, there‟s no need to
imagine anymore, as Facebook and Twitter use soars beyond the combined total of 900
million users. Social media is now mainstream. Many businesses, cultural organisations and
other institutions are leveraging social media to achieve their strategic goals. While many
libraries already have a social media presence via Facebook and Twitter, how are libraries
considering social media as part of their core communication and engagement strategies?
How are libraries preparing their staff to communicate and engage professionally using social
media through the inclusion of social media in library strategic plans? In short, how are
libraries future-planning for the inclusion of formal social media roles in their institutions?
It‟s time to start answering these questions and to put forward the case for formal recognition
of social media duties and the creation of specialist social media librarian roles. A review of
the literature across library and non-library sectors will investigate the current social media
environment relating to strategy, communication and engagement. In addition, the outcomes
from a survey of library and information professionals and paraprofessionals on Social Media
Roles in Australian Libraries data will be discussed. This will highlight current practice in
social media strategy, communication and engagement. A range of pathways will be
explored for libraries entering this exciting yet challenging space, and for those interested in
creating the new library positions of the future.

Bonding

Looking deep into Daisy's eyes I can tell she still misses her companion Dharma, however I think she has come to terms that Delilah is here to stay. Every night that we let the dogs inside for play and cuddle time Daisy is beginning to respond to Delilah play requests. They grab each end of a toy to tug and wrestle. When she has had enough Daisy retreats to the back ledge of the couch for some calm time. Using her paws Delilah lightly taps Daisy prompting her "come on, I wanna play more" she evens barks at her to edge her down.
I too miss Dharma immensely, the simplest of things can trigger memories then the teary emotions take over. To nurture our relationship Delilah and I had a mummy and puggy day. Phil dropped off Daisy to my mums to have a play date with Abby.  We went for a drive to watch Phil play football where she got lots of admiring looks and cuddles from kids wanting to hold her and take her for a walk.

At the start of the drive she wouldn't sit still not happy on the passengers seat wanting to be on my lap, however the longer we drove the dopier she got, content to rest her head and just watch me straining to keep her eyes open.

She has become my little shadow, especially when inside at night, if i get up off the couch to do something she is at my feet.  Even when one night I was finishing a uni assignment she she stood at my side with her tail between her legs until I picked her up to lie on my lap whilst I typed.

Training

A new puppy let alone one that is now nearly 6 months old requires a lot of attention and guidance.
Repetition, reward and praise generally works but for a stubborn puppy with attitude may require patience too.

Phil on the inside of the shed me on the outside both squatting at either side of the doggy door. Using Daisy as the instructor we called her in and out, Phil giving the reward of a pat and "good girl" me offering a liver treat on the other side.  Delilah got whacked in the head/nose several times with the back swing after Daisy went through, but after persistent coaxing and holding the door slightly for her she finally got it.  Daisy especially loved the training with a full belly of treats.

Now that she had the idea of doing something on instruction = reward, time to intensify her teachings.

Next was sit and stay, sit she mastered quite quickly but its hard to stay put and resist a treat when its placed in front of you :-).  She sits on command or whenever there's food around that she thinks she is entitled to a piece of.

I'm currently working on "bang bang" which is enabled by a "finger gun" with Delilah from a sitting position rolling over for a tummy rub.  Even though I taught Daisy this trick as an older dog, Delilah is taking awhile to put it all together.

Reflections

Delilah found her voice when in the back yard late one night,  the sheds outside light was casting my shadow onto the fence.  Well, she thought we were being invaded, her hair on her back stood up then the low grumble of a growl turned into a full on barking session.
Following this amusing event we thought we introduce Delilah to her reflection no words required see the video below....

New Discoveries

One of the joys of a new puppy is watching and sharing in her first experiences, some being quite humorous with others quite challenging.
Bath time I believe is referred to by Delilah as massage time.  Entering the water in the laundry tub was first met with anxiety but it wasn't long before she was at ease in the warm water with suds lathering as I scrubbed massaging from head to tail. Once rinsed she enjoyed being ruffed up whilst being dried with the towel.

Dharma always loved visits to the vet, since her first puppy school class she relished all the loving attention and treats she got from the staff.  Both her and I became close to vet assistant Donna, we cried together when Dharma passed.  I hope that Delilah comes to love Donna and feels comfortable at the vets.
Delilah first visit was for a check up to ensure she was healthy with no hereditary conditions etc. With only dirty ears requiring drops for a couple of days and a slight overbite she was given the ok.
Given that I brought Delilah from a breeder that originally was going to show and/or breed, Delilah had not been exposed to much outside her tiny dirt floored pen. She is nervy around strangers and flinches with her tail between her legs at the sound of passing cars.  The severity seems to be reducing the more we take her for walks and her confidence gains.
My uncertainty if Delilah was toilet trained was answered when I caught her doing No. 1's inside on Daisy's bed!!!!! mid stream I grabbed her and whisked her outside onto the lawn stating wees must be done here. Underestimating her intelligence it has not happened again and she now goes to the toilet on the command of "do wees".

Settling In

Delilah is just over five months old. I wonder if she was a younger puppy would Daisy have accepted her more easily.  Daisy was an amazing mum to her two litters. I think Daisy sees her as competition rather than a pup that she can be attentive too, as I've seen her with puppies in the park and mums dog Abbie.Delilah too is weary of Daisy, apprehensive after being put in her place a couple of times.  However she follows Daisy very closely, learning the layout of her new home, running from door to window depending on whose home and in what room of the house, hoping to be let inside to play and be cuddled.

View from my bathroom window.

Introductions

Delilah was fully alert on her journey to her new forever home, her big brown eyes longing gazed out of the bars of her cage. She couldn't settle only the occasional long blink, she was timid, uncertain of what was going on I constantly reassured her with a loving voice that she going to be ok
Daisy meets Delilah with some trepidation but after the usual doggy sniffing in the usual doggy places, we placed there leads on and a walk to the park to bond and stretch their legs.
It didn't take long for Delilah to bond with Phil, she followed him so closely just behind his heel, i'm not sure how she actually didn't get hit!  Daisy chased the ball, and Delilah chased Daisy trying to grab hold of her lead, a funny sight.
It soon became apparent that Daisy was not to fond of Delilah joining the family.  Night time cuddles became Daisy escaping to the top of the head rest of the couch whilst Delilah ran circles around the lounge room from Phil to myself to the laundry to refresh with a drink of water.
Daisy's jealously even resulted in a couple of snarls and snaps to asserted her authority and to ensure that she still got our attention and affection.

Emotions

Driving along the highway approaching Eaglehawk I was flooded with emotions......  It was just a week ago that my beloved pug Dharma went to heaven.  We buried her along with her favorite squeaky toy in a grassy spot in the backyard where she spent hours warming herself in the sun. Daisy our Pug cross spent time at mums with her dog Abbie to keep her company, on her return home Daisy has been miserable becoming our shadow, needing attention, affection and company.
Loving memories of 13 wonderful years with Dharma filled my thoughts, with each tear that trickled down my check I wondered am I ready for a new dog? These emotions escalated when I arrived at the address, taking a deep breath I opened the gate and walked the long drive way.  Observing my surrounds I could hear dogs barking and noticed an array of pug statues :-)
I'm here, ready or not Donna here I come!
I was expecting to fall madly in love with her at first sight, but it never happened?? Several face time phone calls to Phil I still wasn't sure.  I'd just driven 3 hours to go home alone?
It wasn't until an hour later when I was sitting on the veranda with Jock & Elaine chatting when Donna being cheeky was trying to climb up into another dogs bed when I called out using her new name "Delilah, come here" she turned and sprinted towards me into my arms .... she had me, she was coming home with me.
